Support Driven Expo is almost here. We are excited to start organizing day-of details, and we need your help! Volunteers will have the chance to contribute to and participate in Expo: meet attendees and speakers, provide support for the conference, attend sessions, and help ensure attendees have an excellent experience. We are looking for people are enthusiastic and who love to help. If this sounds like you, keep reading!
As a volunteer at Expo, you will:
- Be an essential part of the event.
- Learn the inner organizational workings of a support conference.
- Spend quality time with Expo organizers.
- Have the opportunity to meet speakers and members from the Support Driven community.
- Be on the ground, interacting with Expo attendees.
- Have an opportunity to attend the conference part of the time and volunteer part of the time.
I’m in! What does Expo need help with?
Expo needs help June 21-22, the days of the event, with these types of details:
Registration/reference table – Check in attendees at the door and dispense Expo wristbands. Perfect for someone who likes meeting and greeting people and checking names off of lists. The registration table is also where attendees tend to go to ask questions about the event, and we’ll want to keep that table staffed even during non-registration times. (6-8 needed)
Question-answerer — We will have a special wristband for folks who are happy to answer questions that pop up as attendees navigate Expo. If you would like to identify yourself as a willing question-answerer, let us know and we’ll make sure you get the right color wristband (and all the answers you need). (No set number needed — we’ll take as many as are willing).
Setup / Breakdown — Each day will require some setup and breakdown: tables, chairs, room arrangements, equipment presence, workshop supplies to the appropriate rooms. Many hands make light work in this area, so if you’re good with shuffling furniture and making sure supplies and materials are in the proper locations, we’d love your help here. (3-5 needed)
Talk Room Emcee — The talk rooms will include a pre-loaded slide deck and 20-minute talks every half hour. An emcee will bring the room together, provide flow, introduce speakers, and keep things running on schedule. This job is perfect for someone who’s thinking about one day getting on stage to present a talk and would like an introductory way to practice being in front of an audience. (4 needed)
Audio / Visual — Requires knowing your way around audio equipment and troubleshooting laptop to projector setups (4 needed)
Runners — There are always things that need to be gotten :-) Runners are happy to handle unexpected errands on site. (4 needed)
Wherever there’s a need — Helping out with random unspecified things here and there, etc.
Will Expo pay for my expenses?
Volunteers receive a complementary ticket to Expo, which includes the Welcome and Launch parties, talk and workshop sessions, Career Unconference sessions, Support Bars, Career Fair, and of course the community meetups. We are unable to cover travel and lodging expenses for volunteers, which means that if you want to get involved, you will need to cover the costs of getting to and staying in Portland, Oregon.
What Should I Expect?
Once you are accepted as a volunteer at Expo, you’ll be added to the volunteer team, and depending on your skills and preferences, you’ll be assigned various tasks to carry out throughout the event. Volunteers should plan on committing to at least 4 hours of volunteering, and the more volunteers we have, the more of the conference each volunteer gets to experience.
Volunteers will need to be on site at 8AM June 21 for a volunteer meeting. The whole team will meet to go through the running of the conference. Volunteers will visit the venue to familiarize yourself with the locale, then help with setting up the event.
On the days of the event, you’ll be carrying out your assigned tasks, working as part of a team. And as Brittany Ferg, Expo’s volunteer coordinator, said about her volunteer experience with Support Driven events, volunteering at Expo presents a unique opportunity to work alongside amazing people from the Support Driven community.
Awesome! Let’s do this! How do I apply?
